Each morning in Marbella, young footballers from across the globe gather on the same pitch, united by a shared ambition. This is Proformance Football Academy—an international training programme for players aged 8 to 18 who are determined to elevate their game.
Established by former professional footballer Yuri Ruh dos Santos, the academy now represents more than twenty nationalities and operates throughout the year. Its foundation lies in the kind of structured environment Yuri experienced during his own career: carefully periodised training, high-level coaching, and a clear pathway towards elite performance. This approach, applied consistently across all age groups, forms the basis of the YRDS methodology. Over the years, Proformance has helped develop players who have progressed to clubs such as Arsenal, Aston Villa, Villarreal, Real Betis, and Ajax.
Yuri places equal emphasis on mindset as he does on technical ability. As he explains, “Every player here is working towards something. For some, it is a professional career; for others, university football or simply becoming the best version of themselves. For us, this goes beyond a job. We treat every player as one of our own, and we are fully committed to their development.” This philosophy is embedded throughout the academy’s culture.
A typical day mirrors the structure of a professional environment rather than that of a conventional youth programme. Mornings are dedicated to intensive on-pitch sessions, including technical drills, physical conditioning, and tactical work. Following this, players return to the academy’s base in the centre of San Pedro for the academic portion of their day.
Education is given equal importance. Lessons are delivered online by qualified in-house teachers within a structured timetable, leading to internationally recognised qualifications. Students are expected to approach their studies with the same focus and discipline they apply on the pitch. Academic progress is monitored just as closely as football performance, ensuring that every player leaves the academy equipped not only with sporting ability but also with the qualifications and mindset needed for university or a professional career—whether within football or beyond. For many parents, this balance provides significant reassurance.
Competitive match experience is also a key component of the programme. Players are integrated into local Spanish clubs, competing regularly within the youth league system alongside Spanish teammates. These weekly fixtures provide valuable exposure to one of Europe’s most demanding football environments and play a crucial role in player development, while also maintaining strong ties with the local football community.
During July and August, Proformance runs a summer clinic for players aged 10 to 18, welcoming both local participants and those visiting from abroad.
