Churches in San Pedro

The main church in San Pedro Alcántara is located next to the town hall in the Plaza de la Iglesia (church square), and was built by the village founder, the Marqués del Duero between 1860 and 1866. However, it was not opened to public until 1869 in order to provide the agricultural colony that had been set up with a place for catholic events and religious ceremonies. It was then completely burned down in 1936 as a result of the Spanish Civil War, but was later restored in 1943.

Through the years it has undertaken several renovations, the last one being in 2013 with the refurbishment of the roof structure. Since then, it has been the focal point of baptisms, weddings and funerals for the inhabitants of San Pedro, but just as often you can also see foreigners getting married in this charming and traditional church, which is celebrating its 158th year anniversary. The church square is currently being totally remodeled, which will improve the infrastructure and provide further green areas and shade.

Iglesia Virgen del Rocío
San Pedro also has a second but larger church that was built in the 20th century. This is also a focal point for the townspeople and is especially popular for weddings and baptisms as it is housed in a grander building with a garden and large frontal square with easy parking just across the road.

Besides traditional mass celebrated in Spanish throughout the year, this church also offers services in English from the Anglican Church of England, which welcomes people from all areas, including Estepona and Marbella. The congregation comes from many different countries and denominations, and holidaymakers as well as residents are welcome to go along every Sunday at 10 am to participate in choir singing and hymns during the church service.

Capilla Inmaculada Concepción
San Pedro also has a smaller but quaint little chapel located in the Guadalmina area, which also offers mass in Spanish. Although not so well known, it has become very popular amongst the rich and famous due to its beach proximity, enchanting architecture and beautiful surroundings.
