Northern Ring Road

When it comes to the roads in and around San Pedro de Alcantara, any news of additional links that take traffic away from the main road are extremely welcome. The latest proposal is a northern bypass around San Pedro. The plan is to develop a large plot of around 21,000 square metres and link the Ronda road to Nueva Andalucia.

The local government has approved the final tender document that was presented for the €15 Million scheme which is expected to be completed within 30 months. The overall objectives of the scheme is to provide additional much needed parking spaces as well as transport links.

From the project 12,000 square metres will be allocated specifically for a centralised boulevard linking Avenida Pablo Ruiz Picasso (the top road above the church square that takes you to Mercadona and the industrial estate) and Calle Fuente Nueva (the area that is near the municipal sports centre). It is planned that it will be built over a 215 space underground car park. This is the area where there are currently new property developments such as The Grove and Upper 101. The project will be fully funded by Marbella council and is expected to commence in 2027.

After the completion of this first phase the next phase will be to complete what they are calling ‘the northern ring road’ which will connect the Ronda road and the access roads to Nueva Andalucía.

The project will use the undeveloped land in front of the Elena Benítez Sports Centre in San Pedro transforming it from an overgrown area to a modern space for everyone to enjoy. The northern ring road starting at Avenida Virgen del Rocío will continue along Príncipe de Asturias and Jorge Guillén, linking up with the new boulevard to ideally divert traffic away from the main A7.

Another key benefit will be the removal of the two electricity pylons and overhead electricity cables between Fuente Nueva and Avenida Pablo Ruiz Picasso as they will be places underground, greatly improving the aesthetics of the entire area.
